I currently teach US history and so this page will include some of the information my classes have been working with.

UNITS OF INSTRUCTION

Introduction and Overview, US Conflicts and Geography, World Involvements and Geography


Day 1
Hand out Course Overview sheet, discuss school policies, classroom procedures and rules, introduce self to the students with brief oral resume, place web page information on board so that they can access it if their absent or interested.

Day 2
Have the students write a brief one page summary of themselves and list 5 hobbies or activities they enjoy participating in. Then, the students will draw symbols on a sheet of paper that represent their interests and hobbies. They will then color these and share them to the class, either showing their pictures or reading their bio. summary of themselves.

Day 3
Geography of the United States. The students will be issued a US map and label all the states and their capitals. They will shade in certain states depending on their population and other characteristics. They will also label key mountain chains, bodies of water, rivers, and other key places. Finally, they will answer questions about the history of the US to see where their knowledge level is at. ASSIGN SEMESTER RESEARCH PROJECT ON TOPICS FROM 1945 TO PRESENT, WORTH 100 POINTS

Day 4
Overhead notes will be discussed and taken on Major US Conflicts. There will be a quiz on this information and state capitals in the near future.

We will then discuss how war changes things in history and what each of these wars changed in American history and culture.

Day 5
The students will complete a Mapping Exercise of the World labeling key areas that are related to the US during the American Cultures IV time period from the end of WWII to present. After this the US Presidents of this time period will be placed on the overhead along with their dates in office and a brief statement summing up their presidency. Ex. Good Foreign Policy but Resigned over Watergate cover-up.

The 40's & 50's, "The Greatest Generation"?


Day 1
-Timeline Notes on Key events of the Late 40's.
-Closer Look at FDR, Reading Packet and Reading Guide
-Preview Text information and complete guide on Post War Europe and Japan

Day 2
-Preview text material and complete reading guide on section 2 dealing with domestic concerns, Economy and Returning soldiers.
-Watch clip from century series dealing with this time period. Video guide on this information.

Day 3
-Reading guide on major Cold War issues, Rosenbergs and the A-bomb and H-bomb.
-Closer look at Harry S. Truman, Reading Packet and reading guide.

Day 4
-Discussion on the Korea War, Summary handout
-Maps on Korea completed for grade
-Video on the Korean conflict, discussion on firing of MacArther.

Day 5
-Textbook materials on the Korean War, Chinese fall to communism, etc.
-Begin reviewing for first major test dealing with late 40's and introduction information, Worth 100 points.

Day 6
-Take 40's test which will take bulk of class period, Tests usually have matching, multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions to test many styles of evaluation.

THE 1950's

Day 1
-Timeline notes on major events of the 50's
-Text material, Section 1 covered and reading guide assigned.
-Assign maps of Asia homework.

Day 2
-Closer look at Ike, Packet and questions
-Video on 50's broken up into 5 parts with video guide packet with questions.

Day 3
-Finish video guide packet info. and video itself.
-Section 2 of text discussed.

Day 4
-Start contrasts of the 50's picture project.
-Project will take bulk of period

Day 5
-Present the project to the class, Worth 50 points.
-Section 3 of text completed

Day 6
-Section 4 of text completed
-Review for 50's test.

Day 7
-Take 50's test that will take the bulk of the period.

Slavery and its Impacts on Today


Day 1
Introduction to the Unit, Preassessment Test, What's the point to study cultural history?

Day 2
African History- Brief Overview, Main goal is to present the Africa was highly civilized before European influence and Colonization.

Day 3
Contact with the British, How Africans described and treated, Though were animals at first and treated them as such. Dehumanization.

Day 4
Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, ROOTS capture scene, Middle Passage and treatment of slaves, Pieces of meat only valued as cargo.

Day 5
Slavery Itself-Different Forms, Domestic vs. Labor work, Slave Auctions, Treatment of women, runaways and punishments.

Day 6
A Country Divided, Slavery is issue that split nation hostilely in half, eventhough many in the north didn't want blacks in their cities taking their jobs.

Day 7
Abolition Movement, people start acting on feelings, Newspapers, The Liberator, The North Star, Underground Railroad, Biography Research paper done.

Day 8
The American Civil War, Quick Overview, Confederateds win early, Gettysburg and Grant named as general shortly after changes tide, 54 Regiment and impacts of black soldiers, Glory scenes shown.

Day 9
Reconstruction, Assassination of Lincoln, Impacts for country, Trying to put back together, Share Croppers, Migration North into cities, Ghettos formed, Urban Racism and Sectionalizaton.

Day 10
Segregaton- Seperate but Equal?, How things really were for black vs. white institutions, Court cases to change, Actions that occurred.

Day 11
Civil Rights Movement, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, and others, another biography research paper done at this time. Will discuss more in the 1960's unit.

Day 12
Current Day Inequalities, Personal High School stories of racism, gang fights, and major tensions in schools.

Day 13
Racism-Concept Lesson Plan, What exactly is it and How can one possible understand if not experienced it? Role playing and acting out scenes depicting current and past racist practices.

Day 14
Challenging Racism and other forms of Discrimination of all people through positive contact and Social Action. Develop a plan or system to help ease tensions amongst people with diverse backgrounds.

The 60's and Civil Rights


MUCH OF THE INFORMATION ON THE CIVIL RIGHTS WILL BE DISCUSSED IN THE SLAVERY AND IMPACTS ON TODAY UNIT.

VIETNAM UNIT (12 days)


Day 1
Intro. Oral Notes on Section 1, Dads uniforms, medals, pictures, and stories.

Day2
Video and study guide on the Ascending Dragon about the geography and culture of Vietnam and IndoChina.

Day 3
Issue reading packet on geography, culture, and major war issues, Complete study guide #1. Look at world map on wall and Indochina map on overhead. Discuss key geographic areas.

Day 4
Take quiz #1 on Vietnam, when complete map by locating places and shading in countries.

Day 5
Discuss notes on section 2 of textbook, complete reading packet study guide #2 and #2.5. Watch Vietnam scenes of "Forest Gump".

Day 6
Take Quiz #2 on Vietnam, after discuss notes on section 3 of text, complete study guide #3 and final study guide, Songs of the Vietnam era, Play two songs and display lyrics on the overhead, Discuss what the songs are saying about War.

Day 7 Take quiz #3 and introduce project from section 3 of textbook, Group Project on Pro-War vs. Anti-War movements, Groups are to come up with 10 reasons either for or against the War and list them. Then they are to make a poster with symbols representing what they have listed. The group leaders will come together to make a master list.

Day 8
Finish up project and present to the class, The students then will make point-counter-point debates from their master lists the leaders created. Take final quiz #3 matching quiz.

Day 9
Review for the test, give students main ideas towards Vietnam 4 major issues, finish notes from textbook on sections 4 & 5.

Day 10
Watch 1st half of TV edited film BAT 21 while highlighting Vietnam Vocabulary. Questions on 1st half when done.

Day 11
Take quiz on 1st half notes and discussion. Finish watching BAT 21 and discuss the film. Assign homework review worth 10 points fill in the blank packet on key Vietnam issues.

Day 12
Spend this day discussing the review packet and reviewing for the test. Watch The Century series information on Vietnam.
Day 13
Take the Vietnam test which will take the bulk of the class period. If finish early, start previewing the 70's section of the textbook.

THE 1970's UNIT (12 days)


Day 1
Introduction - The 70's mini-series w/ Study Guide #1

Day 2
Finish 70's Part 1 and study guide #1

Day 3
Start 70's Part 2 and study guide #2

Day 4
Finish 70's Part 2 and collect study guides 1 + 2 for a quiz grade. Also, timeline notes on 70's.

Day 5
Textbook Study guide 1, Terms and People, Also study guide 2, The Watergate people.

Day 6
Crossword study guide 3 on the Carter Years, Study guide 4 Outline of sect. 4 with areas filled in and some left blank.

Day 7
Introduction of 70's project, Grading Rubric, 4 People in a group, Artist, Leader, Writer, and Researcher- Goal Create a Picture/Coffee table book on assigned topics of the 70's

Day 8 & 9
Complete the Group Picture Book Project, Researcher can travel to the Library to type and download photos.

Day 10
Presentation of projects to the class, Min. of 5 minutes, Write topic and 5 pictures used on the board for class to put into notes. Other interesting facts about 70's (Overhead notes) Right to life issues, Genetics, Popular Culture-ROOTS, and PC revolution.

Day 11
Video "The Century" Second part of the 70's dealing with major crisis issues such as Energy Crisis and Iran-Hostage Crisis 45 minutes. Review game Jeopardy, 7 catagories on board, 3 teams with one spokesperson and paper sheets to write answers, two volunteers, one judge, one score keeper, Teacher reads questions.

Day 12
The 1970's Test, Format Fill in Blank on Presidents and descriptions, Matching on key leaders and people, Multiple Choice varied, Short answer varied, and Essay on mini-series, project, and/or why Reagan beat Carter in the 1980 election.

The 1980's The Reagan Years


Day 1
The 1980's Timeline on overhead notes 2 parts 79-84, and 85-91. Start study guides.

Day 2
Crossword Puzzle Study Guide on People of section 1.
Study Guide 2 on section 1 dealing with Terms and Places. SDI power point presentation and discussion of value of strong defense over concerns and issues of domestic problems.

Day 3
Activity on graphing of the Federal Debt increase under Reagan and Economy of the 80's. What was Reaganomics and why did the economy crash in 1987?Also complete a reading packet and study guide on the life and times of Ronald Reagan.

Day 4
The students will complete a Mapping project on the old Soviet Union and the countries and area after the Breakup, 4 Roles established, 2 Mapping Artists, 1 Summary Writer, and 1 Group Leader. Some sort of review activity for 1980's Quiz

Day 5
Take Quiz on the 80's, Matching, Multiple Choice, Short Answer, and 1 essay. Finish watching "The Century" part six as intro into the 90's.

The 1990's Bush and Clinton


Day 1
Overhead notes on the timeline of the 1990's. Crossword on people of the 90's completed. Study guide on terms and events completed.

Day 2
The students will complete a mapping activity of the Gulf War, label countries related, bodies of water, and shade in allies. Watch video and complete worksheet on nuclear threat.

Day 3
Discussion on the election of 1992. Crossword puzzle on key people and events of the 90's.

Day 4
Closer look at the Clinton Era. Discuss and highlight the positives and negatives of his Presidency. List by years on the board and copy into notes.

Day 5
-Review for 90's test.
-Watch the Century last video and discuss events.

Day 6
-Take 90's test
-Discuss lastest Presidential Election
-Discuss terrorist attacks on US and how the world has changed because of these events.

THE FINAL/Worth 200 points total/ 1/5 of grade.



Day 1
-Spend this day reviewing geography, 3 key maps, US, Europe, and finally the World.
-Geography section on test is worth 100 pts. and there will be no notes used for this part.

Day 2
-Jeopardy review for the non-geography part, This part consists of Matching and Multiple choice. Worth 100 points.

Day 3 Final Day, take Final and complete a course evaluation sheet, Recommendations for the course.
